What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced as ray-kee) is a Japanese/Tibetan technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki can be administered to animals as well as individual people.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: "Rei" which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and "Ki" which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki does not depend on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.
Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds. Reiki classes are taught in many parts of the world.
A Brief Overview
The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.
Is Reiki a Religion?
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from a "higher power", many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
While Reiki is not a religion, for optimum well being in the light of Eastern medical theory that we are a mind-body-spirit unity, it is necessary to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui (History Of Reiki), the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.
Can Anyone Learn Reiki?
The ability to learn Reiki is not dependent on intellectual capacity, nor does one have to be able to meditate. It does not take years of practice. It is simply passed on from the teacher to the student. As soon as this happens, one has and can do Reiki. Because of this, it is easily learned by anyone.
Reiki is a pure form of healing not dependent on individual talent or acquired ability. Because of this, the personality of the healer is less likely to cloud the significance of the experience. The feeling of being connected directly to God's healing love and protection is clearly apparent.

A Dog Lover's Story
If you love Reiki and you love dogs, you might like this.
A few weeks ago a friend and I went to a party and took his dog, who also is temporarily staying with me, the dog I mean. At the party there were two other dogs, Romeo, the dog who stays with me, had a wonderful time playing with the two other pups. All less than a year old.
Within a week, one of those sweet dogs was dead. No one knew why, but suspected poison.
Within the next week, Romeo was throwing up, and didn't even have enough energy to get off the porch. We all panicked! We brought him in the house, laid down beside him, drew Reiki symbols all over him and didn't take our hands off him for hours. Later, we took him to the vet, who pumped him full of fluids and diagnosed him as having some lethal virus. The prognosis was not good, there is a 100 percent mortality rate with this virus. We took him home and tucked him into bed with us again and continually Reikied him.
In between Reiki treatments we coaxed him to eat and drink and took him to the vet for extra fluids. Sometimes he was so sick, his eyes just rolled back in his head. We were all in tears, but just kept on doing Reiki with him and covering him with symbols. On the third day, he got well just as suddenly as he got sick.
He was good as new, racing around the yard, chewing everything in sight and delighting us all. We are extremely grateful for and in awe of the power of Reiki, especially his owner.
