Brother and sister Tyler and Lauren Rowlands were very concerned when their mum Dawn told them she had spotted a young tabby cat stuck up a tree near their home in Middleton Gardens. "It miaowed at her in fright," said 10-year-old Lauren, who e-mailed the Star to tell us the whole story. "My mum was very worried about the poor creature, It had been there for most of the day so she decided to call the RSPCA." "They said to leave it for at least 48 hours before they would come to rescue it; and that if it could have got up there, then it could get down again," said Lauren. When Lauren and her eight-year-old brother returned from Cove Junior School Friday afternoon, the little cat was still aloft. Tyler spotted workmen employed at a neighbour's house – and they had a van with a ladder. "My brother went over to the man and asked if he would get the poor animal down," said Lauren. The man and a colleague, from Mr Electric, duly mounted a rescue operation. One climbed the ladder and managed to grasp the cat, which was very scared. The man passed the cat to his mate – at which point it jumped out of the man's arms and dashed off without a backward glance. "Thank you to the Mr Electric workers for being so kind and generous," said Lauren. On Monday, Dawn Rowlands called the Star to say the young cat had since returned to visit the family and had been hanging around, nipping in for food and a few cuddles. These have not been in short supply, said Dawn, who also has another son, Cole, aged six, and 21-month-old toddler Lily. The children have been vying to choose a name for their foundling; Tabitha, Mittens and Skull are the front-runners. Dad Darren – also an electrician – has apparently vetoed the cat's staying, since he is allergic to felines. So the family is hoping the young animal's owner will recognise it and come to claim it. It hasn't been established if the creature is male or female and the Rowlandses have put up posters with photos on to find the owner. Anyone who believes the cat might be theirs can call the Star on 01252-316311. |
