Lucky Cat Saved From Intentional Drowning Source: Ithaca Journal, NY ![]() Lucky cat, this moggy was found in a weighted bag near a creek in Newfield but was rescued by a passerby and taken to the SPCA.
According to the SPCA, the bag was spotted at 8:15 Monday morning by a Newfield resident driving along Newfield Depot Road who stopped at a pull-off between two small waterfalls near the intersection of Adams and Smith roads. The bag appeared to be moving, and the driver got out, climbed down, untied the rope tied to shut the bag, and found the cat and brick. The driver, not named by the SPCA, brought the cat to the organization's shelter on Hanshaw Road east of Ithaca. The cat is a domestic shorthair female tiger. The bag appears to be a couch cushion cover or pillowcase and is green-blue in colour with beige or grey trim, according to the SPCA. SPCA officers went to the scene in search of evidence and spoke with nearby residents in hopes of identifying the cat but have turned up no more information, according to SPCA Executive Director Abigail Smith. Smith said she wanted to publicize the incident in part in hopes of drumming up new information, but more so to point out that the SPCA will take pets that are unwanted, no charge, no questions asked. She noted that under state Agriculture and Markets law, Article 26, Section 353-a, a person found guilty of aggravated cruelty (intentionally killing a companion animal) will be charged with a felony. “I don't know what drives people to kill an animal when there is a place for them in their community,” Smith said. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call Tompkins County Animal Control at 607-257-1822, ext. 238 or 229. The shelter is at 1640 Hanshaw Road near the Dryden-Ithaca town line. |
