History

In july, 1992, a small group of dedicated individuals saw and acted on an unmet need in our community to help control feline over-population through spaying and neutering. Our initial goal was to rescue, test for feline leukemia and feline immune deficiency virus, vaccinate, spay or neuter, and then return them to their original locations. These cats would subsequently be fed and monitored on a daily basis. We expected that most of these cats would be wild. Instead, we found many who behaved as though they had long ago been someone's companion animal; but now were terrified, defensive, and in poor health. We believed that given the proper nurturing these cats would certainly once again become loving companions. The next logical step was to open a place for these felines in need.

On the 18th of April, 1993, a small "Haven" was opened in a rented building in Guilford. During that same year, the Hope Alliance received official non profit status by the IRS, thus making all contributions tax deductable. In April 1999, we moved the Orphanage to the present location in the Morris Cove section of New Haven. Shortly thereafter, we became painfully aware that there were many special needs cats who were being euthanized by other organizations because they did not have the resources to provide the extra care that was needed. These special orphans needed a place to live where they could receive individualized care on a daily basis, and be treated with compassion and respect. At the Hope Alliance, they are truly loved and accepted just the way they are. Their special needs, whether physical, emotional, or both, just make them "extra special!"

In addition to caring for special needs cats, we are still able to take in a limited number of cats who are healthy, but have been abandoned on the streets.

Each Hope Alliance cat receives veterinary care from Dr. Efren Osorio and his staff at their office in North Branford. Without their endless patience and expert knowledge we would be lost! We are truly blessed to have them in our lives.

We currently have 20 to 25 cats at our orphanage, which is staffed entirely by volunteers. The orphans live in a clean and healthy environment where they are able to roam freely. Our organization practises a no kill policy. Any cat coming in to our facility can reside there indefinitely if he/she is not adopted. All potential adopters are thoroughly screened. If for any reason a cat cannot stay in his/her adopted home, we will gladly take the cat back.

Volunteering

Our volunteer program provides opportunities for people to help in several ways. "Hands On" volunteers can work directly with the orphans, or they can assist with the daily feedings and chores.

Fund raising volunteer help is also needed. This includes participation in our tag sales, bake sales, bottle and can drive and selling candy. We are always looking for new ideas on ways to raise money. We currently do not receive city or state funding and therefore rely entirely on donations and fund raising efforts.

Donations of the following kind are always needed:

  • Canned cat food (Friskies, Iams or Kal Kan).
  • Paper plates.
  • Paper towels.
  • Trash bags.
  • Unscented laundry detergent.
  • Baking soda.
  • Postage stamps.
  • Cat toys and snacks.
  • Anti-bacterial soap.
  • Washcloths and towels.
